Prof Alan Buchman
Dr. Alan Buchman is Professor of Surgery and Medical Director of the Intestinal Rehabilitation and Transplant Center at the University of Illinois/Chicago, and Medical Director of Gastroenterology at Elevance Health. He graduated from Northwestern University, the Chicago Medical School, and the UCLA School of Public Health. His residency was at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, followed by fellowships in Nutrition (UCLA) and Gastroenterology (Emory). He has held faculty positions at Baylor, University of Texas-Houston, and Northwestern.
Dr. Buchman edits Gastroenterology Clinics of North America and has authored nearly 250 publications, including four books. He holds three patents. His awards include the AGA’s Hugh Butt Award, the American Society for Nutrition’s Physician Nutrition Specialist and Mead Johnson Awards, and the American College of Nutrition’s Grace Goldsmith Award.
A former president of the American Federation for Medical Research, Dr. Buchman chaired the FDA’s Gastrointestinal Drugs Review Committee and the AGA’s Nutrition/Obesity Section, and served on the National Commission on Digestive Diseases.
