Prof Jim Toouli

Jim graduated from Monash University, MBBS (Hons) 1970 and PhD in 1979. Attained FRACS in 1977. Following post graduate surgical training in Glasgow and research in Milwaukee as an NHMRC Fellow he returned to an academic position in the department of Surgery Flinders University and Medical Centre. He became Professor in 1989 and head of the Gastrointestinal Surgery unit until 2004. The unit gained recognition as a centre for hepatobiliary pancreatic surgery, including liver transplantation. Research contributions were in biliary tract motility and acute pancreatitis. He published over 500 papers, chapters and abstracts. He was elected to GESA Council 1991 and was GESA president in 1995.  He was elected to the executive of WGO (OMGE) 1998 and chaired the education committee. He developed the Train the Trainers programme and the WGO Training Centres. He became president of WGO 2012 and was awarded Member of the Order of Australia in 2021.
